Lubbock HUD Cares and Shares Six Computers to Help At-Risk Kids

Tuesday, May 14, 2002

For HUD staff, a computer can be important for a successful project. For low-income kids, a computer (and a caring tutor) can be important - even the key - to a successful life.

HUD's Lubbock Field Office always tries to make a difference for their community. After they upgraded some of their office computers, Director Miguel C. Rincon Jr., and staff had six excess Pentium-133s they could donate to a qualified community organization. These older computers could be the key to a better life for low-income families - and especially children in need. Lubbock HUD posted a notice on their website and quickly received a response from C.A.R.E. (Creating Awareness Reaching Equity, Inc.), a faith-based non-profit group with real compassion for kids - it tutors at-risk children who are falling behind academically in public schools.

The computers will be used by Tutorville, C.A.R.E.'s after-school and summer program that stresses achievement for at-risk, low-income, school-aged youth. The program's goals are to improve academic performance, strengthen parental involvement, and create a positive mentoring relationship between the youth and minority leaders in the community.

Donating - and accepting HUD's excess computers - are Andy T. Hackney, Single Family; Andrien Sawyer, Assistant Executive Director of C.A.R.E.; Miguel C. Rincon Jr.; Lubbock FO Director; and Phyllis J. Boyer, Administrative Support Specialist. Tutorville is housed at the Grace Christian Fellowship Church, in a low-income neighborhood in northeast Lubbock, the Arnett-Benson neighborhood. It is supported by a cadre of tutors from Grace Christian Fellowship, ex-military personnel, and volunteers from the neighborhood.

C.A.R.E. officials expect about 35 kids, ages 6 - 16, to take part in the Tutorville program.
