Wanted: Experienced HUD Employees to Help Shape HUD's Future Leaders

Monday, May 20, 2002

Over the next five years, up to 60 percent of HUD's workforce will be eligible to retire. How can the Department be sure that the new generation of HUD employees can carry on the outstanding work being done today in field offices and Headquarters alike? A big part of the answer may be the HUD Training Academy's "Operation BrainTrust."

Operation BrainTrust was created to help reduce the loss of valuable experience and skills that large numbers of retirements could produce. With the help of volunteers from HUD's experienced workforce - perhaps you! - the HUD Training Academy (HTA) is working to empower the upcoming generation of HUD leaders. HTA is now actively recruiting volunteer "Professors" from all programs and all functions (line and staff) to join Operation BrainTrust. This will ensure that the widest scope of program and technical knowledge - and the experience that no book or study program can match - is passed on to the men and women who will carry out HUD's mission in the coming years and decades.

"Operation BrainTrust - The Search for HTA Professors" means that the HTA needs you! If you are an enthusiastic "expert" who wants to share your expertise and help mentor current and future employees, you may be selected to be a HUD Professor.

HTA also welcomes recently retired HUD employees! If you have retired from HUD in the last two or three years, please consider sharing your experience and skills for the long-term success of the Department and the good of the families you once served. If you know someone who has retired in the recent past, tell them that the Department would like to hear from him or her again - and possibly return as a HUD Professor.

Men and women selected to be members of the HTA Professors will leave their mark at HUD by passing on their expertise, knowledge and experience to upcoming HUD leaders - managers, professionals, analysts and many, many others. In addition, they will receive the recognition of their peers; strengthen their presentation skills; and have the satisfaction of knowing that they are contributing to the continued success of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

It's up to each employee to decide how much time they can give to the program. But however much or little time they are able to give, HTA staff will work with each HUD professor to help them capture their knowledge and use it in training programs.

More information on Operation BrainTrust is available through HUD's employee-only intranet (including an on-line faculty application form), or you can email the HUD Training Academy at HTA_Faculty_Recruitment@hud.gov, or telephone HTA at 202-708-2391.
