September 20th is National POW-MIA Recognition Day

Friday, September 20, 2002

The Department of Housing and Urban Development recognizes and honors America's Prisoners of War (POW) and Missing In Action (MIA). Last year, Secretary Martinez issued a proclamation that recognized the debt we owe to these brave men and women. It said in part:

"The words on the POW-MIA flag, 'You Are Not Forgotten,' carry a powerful message. The flag - a symbol of quiet hope and solace for families and friends of our nation's missing in action - also helps remind the nation of the sacrifices made by all of our military veterans in defense of liberty, justice and equality."

At that time, the Secretary ordered the POW-MIA flag to be flown along with the American flag, every day at HUD Headquarters. Earlier this year, Secretary Martinez proclaimed that the American flag and the POW-MIA flag would be flown 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with special lighting to show the respect these flags deserve.

HUD pays special attention to America's military veterans and active duty personnel and their families. Visit HUDVET on HUD's website for more information.

A HUD Small Business Open House - designed to help qualified small, minority, women-owned, veteran-owned and disadvantaged businesses do business with HUD - is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, 2002.

Small business representatives will have a chance to meet and speak with HUD program managers and the IT managers who oversee the Department's IT contracting and systems development. It's a perfect opportunity for small and disadvantaged businesses to learn more about HUD's IT program and doing business with HUD… and for HUD to learn more about the many qualified small, disadvantaged and women-owned businesses in the IT community.

A special contracting preview will be led by the Chief Technology Officer, and will include a discussion of the Department's long term IT plans; the existing hardware and software environment; and an overview of upcoming contracting opportunities. In addition, the Chief Procurement Officer will discuss HUD's Streamlined Contracting Process.

The Open House will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the HUD Cafeteria at 451 Seventh Street S.W. Additional time will be allowed after the presentations for you to present your capability statement and discuss specific contracting opportunities with IT, Contracting and program managers. The Office Of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) will also be available to provide information on the Department's small business resources.
