Tuesday, November 19, 2002

The last two of President Bush's HUD nominees requiring Senate confirmation - Alberto Trevino, nominated to be Assistant Secretary of Policy Development and Research, and Carolyn Peoples, nominated as Assistant Secretary of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, were sworn in on Monday, November 18, 2002 by HUD Secretary Mel Martinez.

Last week, the Senate unanimously confirmed Alberto Faustino Trevino, of California, and Carolyn Y. Peoples, of Maryland, to serve in their new senior policy appointments.

"I'm excited about having the final two pieces of this solid management team we have put together, in place and ready to do the important work we were brought here to do," said Secretary Martinez. "These individuals bring a wealth of experience that will help the agency meet its core missions."

Prior to his nomination to HUD, Trevino served as the Principal and Managing Director of the Urban Interface Group and Alberto F. Trevino Advisors, a management firm working in strategic planning, investment analysis, housing and education since 1975. He was Vice President of the Walt Disney Company from 1974-75, where he developed strategies and concepts for EPCOT.

The Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) supports the Department's efforts to help create cohesive, economically healthy communities. PD&R is responsible for maintaining current information on housing needs, market conditions, and existing programs; conducts research on priority housing and community development issues; and provides reliable and objective data and analysis to help formulate policy decisions.

As the Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO), Peoples will be responsible for HUD's fair housing enforcement, education and outreach efforts. In addition, FHEO works to promote economic opportunities for low-income persons and businesses that employ them, and ensures equal employment opportunity within the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Peoples, a native of Baltimore, was nominated by President Bush for the Assistant Secretary position after she founded Jeremiah Housing, Inc., a faith-based, nonprofit housing services organization in Baltimore. She served as its executive director since 1999. For the preceding 25 years, she coordinated and managed HUD-assisted and sponsored housing.
