World AIDS Day - HUD National HOPWA Video Broadcast

Monday, December 02, 2002

World AIDS Day is an annual event created to remember those who have died due to AIDS, and to reflect on the needs of countless thousands and thousands of persons and their families who are struggling with HIV. Sunday, December 1, 2002 marked this year's official World AIDS day, and once again this year the Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) is leading HUD's efforts to recognize the special needs of persons with HIV/AIDS.

Throughout the week ahead, HUD employees and guests will have the opportunity to learn about the impact of HIV on the greater HUD family, their friends and loved ones. Events include special educational programs, speakers on AIDS prevention, on housing programs, a remembrance of those who have died from AIDS, and more. In headquarters, CPD will join with GLOBE, the HUD Health Unit and the Employee Assistance Program to provide information on HIV/AIDS at an information booth in the cafeteria from December 2nd - 5th. All employees are encouraged to take part in one or more events next week. In addition, many HUD state and area offices are holding similar commemorations.

On Thursday, December 5, 2002, HUD will broadcast a video on the HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS) program at 1 pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific. HOPWA funds may be used for a wide range of housing, social services, program planning, and development costs. The video features commentary from HUD clients and from leaders in nonprofit organizations and public agencies who work in partnership with HUD to make HOPWA and related programs successful in their communities. A version of this video was shown earlier this year at a technical training session held in Atlanta, and was well received by field staff attending the training. It's a great opportunity to see how HUD programs benefit persons with HIV/AIDS and hear - in their own words - about the work the Department does to assist them. HUD employees in headquarters and field offices are invited to view the broadcast or web cast, which runs about 35 minutes.
