Please join Secretary Martinez today as he kicks - off Fair Housing Month and marks the 35th anniversary of passage of the Fair Housing Act. Joining the Secretary for the 10:30 a.m. event in the HUD Cafeteria will be Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity Carolyn Peoples and special guest Lynda Johnson Robb, daughter of former President Lyndon Johnson.
The Fair Housing Act, established by Congress in 1968, prohibits discrimination in the financing, rental or sale of any dwelling based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Amendments to the Act in 1988 extended its coverage to prohibit discrimination based on disability or familial status.
