Secretary's Independence Day Message

Thursday, July 03, 2003

Each July 4th, we as Americans come together to celebrate the birth of our country and these very principles of democracy and freedom -- principles we share with millions of people worldwide. And this year, Independence Day has special meaning, for it is the first since the liberation of Iraq and only the second since the terrorist attacks on our cities. We as Americans have grown stronger, more patriotic, more aware of our freedoms. Our nation and our people have risen to each challenge and we have seen liberty and justice prevail.

It is our duty to honor those who have sacrificed for their country and work to ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to live out the American Dream. By building on our experiences as a nation and pursuing opportunity and justice for all our citizens, we will help ensure a brighter future for all Americans. That is why our mission at HUD is so critical and why each and every one of us has an important role to play in the betterment of this nation's communities.

This Independence Day, I extend my warmest wishes to you and your families. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.
