The Lubbock Field Office celebrated the last week of National Homeownership Month by recognizing the efforts of Guadalupe Economic Services Corporation, a local nonprofit organization. GESC provides housing to low and very low-income individuals, and also to immigrant families that have the resources to purchase a home but are unfamiliar with real estate or financial transactions.
Under the leadership of Richard Lopez, the organization has expanded its community services from providing housing and food to also providing comprehensive housing counseling, a single-family lease/purchase program, homeless assistance and emergency winterization services.
So far this year, GESC has helped 30 minority families realize the benefits of the American Dream through FHA-financed homeownership. GESC has acquired 100 city lots available for construction of affordable homes, which will range in cost from $60,000 to $85,000. Currently, ten applicants are expected to become homeowners.
