FHEO "Food for Thought" Luncheon to Focus on Trends in Residential Segregation

Tuesday, August 12, 2003

Today at noon, HUD's Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity continues its Tuesday "Food for Thought" luncheon series with a presentation on residential segregation by John Iceland, assistant professor in the sociology department at the University of Maryland. Professor Iceland will discuss trends in residential segregation, by race, ethnicity and class, in U.S. metropolitan areas from 1980 to 2000.

Before joining the University of Maryland Sociology Department, Professor Iceland served as the chief of the poverty and health statistics branch at the U.S. Census Bureau. His research there focused on issues of poverty and residential segregation.

The luncheon series, held every Tuesday at noon in Room 5202, features speakers who discuss current local and national fair housing issues. Videos are often shown, and each session includes group discussion as well as personal testimonies. The weekly luncheons are intended to inspire HUD employees in their roles as civil rights professionals and enhance the professional development of HUD interns and other new employees. Each luncheon lasts approximately one hour. All staff are invited.

For more information about the luncheon series or to make recommendations for future sessions contact Bryan Greene at extension 7078 or Beth Frank at extension 4033.
