Dr. Seuss Makes a House Call

For Catherine Lamberg, HUD's administrative receiver for the Housing Authority of New Orleans, attending meetings, visiting construction sites and making decisions is all in a day's work. But children attending housing development summer camps in New Orleans don't see her in that important role; they simply know her as the Dr. Seuss lady.

The kids are eager to share their dreams after hearing Dr. Seuss.

This summer, Lamberg took a break from her hectic schedule to visit all of the campsites. And while there, one of the ways she encouraged students was by reading the Dr. Seuss book, "Oh, the Places We'll Go," which celebrates perseverance and decision-making.

Lamberg told the students that the book illustrates the point that "no matter where we come from, we can do great things." She also encouraged the children to travel and see other places in the country.

Lamberg attended the Iberville, Lafitte, Fischer, Florida, Pecan Grove, C.J. Peete, Imperial Drive and St. Bernard sites. She received dozens of enthusiastic responses after asking the children what they wanted to be. "A pediatrician!" "A football player!" "A dentist!" they yelled.

"This is one of my favorite readings and is applicable to young and old alike," said Lamberg. "We can't afford to lose sight of the message this book brings. We have to know that we can be what we want to be but it will take hard work to get us there. And never give up."

Catherine Lamberg, HANO receiver, started the reading program at the New Orleans housing developments. "This is undoubtedly the most rewarding experience I have had since I have served at this Housing Authority," Lamberg said. "The level of spirit and intelligence among our children cannot be denied, and I was happy to share with them the message that they can be whatever they want to be."
