Neighborhood Network Learning Center Gives Louisiana Youth a Head Start

In today's competitive, consumer driven society, anyone looking for a job needs an edge. And in New Orleans, a HUD Neighborhood Network Learning Center is helping provide the edge for those seeking jobs in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Safe Neighborhood Action Plan and Boat People S.O.S., two nonprofit organizations, recently collaborated with the Louisiana Women's Network to present a free job-training workshop.

"The workshop was designed to give New Orleans residents the opportunity to gain additional skills in their job search," said Yosheka Daniel, workshop coordinator.

The workshop emphasized the tourism and hospitality industry, but computer skills were also part of the program. Mock interviews were also held.

The workshop also included a site visit to Six Flags New Orleans, one of the largest tourist attractions in the eastern New Orleans and an obvious choice for residents in search of employment. With their reputation in the tourism industry, Six Flags was looking for those who stood out in their ability to provide quality service to their guests.

"Because this was a joint effort with Six Flags and area hotels, the program provided information on what's expected in the hospitality and tourism industry," Daniel said. "It's because New Orleans relies so heavily on this industry for its economic prosperity that a program such as this is so badly needed."

The computer class was held at the Versailles learning center where participants were able to familiarize themselves with the learning center and other programs and services provided.

The workshop was open to adults 18 or older. Topics included communication skills, guest relations and resume preparation.
