HUD Holds Five Housing Authorities Accountable for HOPE VI Delays

Thursday, November 06, 2003

The Department said yesterday it has told five public housing authorities that they are in default of their HOPE VI revitalization grant agreement for failing to meet project deadlines, and have 90 days to get the developments back on schedule or risk losing $1,000 daily.

The housing authorities are in the District of Columbia; Detroit, MI; Biloxi, MS; Tulsa, OK; and Wheeling, WV.

As a condition of receiving a revitalization grant, housing authorities sign an agreement acknowledging the Department has the authority to take such action if they fail to meet self-imposed deadlines.

The five have each missed deadlines for 10 or more key activities such as hiring a developer, relocating residents, beginning and ending construction.
