Secretary Jackson toured a Bloomington, Indiana home during his visit to Indiana on July 14, 2006. The Sears family is a husband and wife who are both disabled. They purchased the home with assistance from the City of Bloomington, the local Community Action Program, and the Bloomington Housing Authority. Mrs. Sears researched homeownership programs in the library on a web search and contacted the City of Bloomington's Housing and Neighborhood Development for assistance. The Sears received down payment assistance, the city provided the lot to the community action agency who built the home, and the Sears are using their Section 8 voucher to help pay the mortgage.
Joining the Secretary was Mayor Mark Kruzan of Bloomington and Congressman Michael Sodrel. The Secretary presented the Sears family with a plant to recognize the importance of homeownership.
