HUD Grants Aids New York Low-Income Seniors

Friday, October 06, 2006

New York/New Jersey Regional Director Sean Moss was the keynote speaker at the opening of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Senior Complex in Lower Manhattan on September 13, 2006. This is the seventh Section 202 development built and managed by the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged, the nation's largest community-based geriatric social services organization. The complex will provide a wide variety of services to assist residents as they age-in-place enabling them to remain in their community.

HUD's Section 202 program provides funding to nonprofit groups to build and manage supportive housing for very low-income elderly people. It also provides rent subsidies to make them more affordable. Last year, HUD awarded about $700 million to non-profit groups across this nation to build senior housing. Of this amount, New York State generally receives between $30 to $35 million dollars a year.
