Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribal Leaders Held a Community Revitalization Summit

Tribal Leaders with the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe held a meeting on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at their Headquarters in Hollister, NC. The meeting included elected and appointed government officials, federal and local government agencies. The Tribal Leaders provides many programs to its citizenry and the community at-large.

The revitalization will include a new campus for the tribal school, constructing a community center and constructing an alternative sewer system.  They are also planning additional housing development and rehabilitation assistance for 135 single-family homes stated Earl Evans, Director of Economic Development and Tourism for the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe.  The total cost for the project is estimated at $2.4 million. 

After the HUD presentations the Tribal Leaders gave the Summit participants a tour of the area.  The bus tour included representatives from U.S. Senators Elizabeth Dole (R) and Richard Burr's (R) office.  Other guests included a representative from Governor Easley's office and State Senator Robert Holloman (D), State Representatives Lucy Allen (D) and Edward Jones (D) were also in attendance. The County Managers from Warren and Halifax counties participated in the event along with the Sheriff of Warren County. Federal Agencies included USDA and HUD.  Other partners include Rev. James Johnson, Hollister Reach and the nonprofit North Carolina Rural Communities Assistance Project.
