The Birmingham Field Office celebrated Veterans' Day with a special program in tribute to service veterans past and present. The program began with a poem, They Did Their Share, presented by Liz Perryman. This poem pays tribute to the sacrifices made by veterans for the freedom of this country. Maxie Walls followed, by singing Find Us Faithful. Cindy Yarbrough, Field Office Director gave welcoming remarks and recognized each Birmingham Office military veteran individually. She further thanked them on behalf of the entire Field Office, for their service to our country. Ed Coberly, a Birmingham HUD employee who served in World War II, gave the invocation and presented another inspirational poem.
After the opening presentations, Colors were presented by the Hayes High School Junior ROTC Honor Guard, under the leadership of First 1st Sgt. Hardwick Olin Hall, Sr. The young immaculately attired students showed great discipline in the manner in which they presented the Colors and the way they carried themselves throughout the program. But the real star of the day was Lieutenant Colonel John A. Boyd, an Army Reserve Officer with the 81st Regional Readiness Command in Birmingham. He is also an Army Historian, who shared a slide presentation from pictures he took while on a historical mission to Iraq. The U.S. Army selected Lieutenant Colonel Boyd to lead a 3-member team to report on war activities in Iraq. His Power Point presentation contained numerous photographs from his tour and he gave us an on-the-ground perspective of the work our soldiers are doing there.
