Indy Homeless Connect

Wednesday, April 04, 2007

The Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention (CHIP) joined with the City of Indianapolis and numerous sponsors to organize the second annual Indy Homeless Connect. Indy Homeless Connect was an all day event, February 12, 2007, at the Indiana Convention Center where over 800 homeless neighbors were provided with many services. Organizations provided volunteers to provide shelter/housing information, health counseling, medical care, employment services, eye exams/vision care, food, haircuts, and benefit counseling. The event was a “one-stop shop” for services for the homeless that connects with the neighbors who need the services.

The event required hundreds of volunteers to staff the event. Indianapolis Office HUD employees volunteered for the event. A FPM staff member served on the housing committee organizing the event, and coordinated office volunteer efforts. Staff from almost every division volunteered at the event. HUD staffed a booth at the housing area of event where information on low-income housing was distributed. Although many of those seeking assistance face daunting challenges, the HUD team was able to connect several individuals with housing or other services that resulted in immediate solutions to their problems.
