Tuesday, June 12, 2007

On April 11, 2007, during the Birmingham City Council Meeting, Mayor Bernard Kincaid proclaimed the week of April 9-13, 2007 as Community Development Week in the city of Birmingham. Community Development Week is celebrated by local community development agencies across America. Birmingham, Alabama is a HUD-designated Entitlement Community that receives an annual allocation of HUD's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. Birmingham leverages its CDBG funds with various other resources to heighten the positive impact to the communities it serves.

Mr. Cole addressed the mayor, city council and about 100 Birmingham citizens to speak of the vast amount of CDBG funding HUD had provided to Birmingham and of some of the wonderful projects that had been undertaken with these funds. This year's event was particularly significant in Birmingham because Mayor Kincaid presented the Harold Cole, Birmingham HUD Office Community Planning and Development Director, a ceremonial key to the city for his years of work with the Community Development office.

This year, Birmingham's CDBG program continues to support many programs that provide for community and economic development growth and decent, safe and affordable housing to families in need.
