Statement by HUD Secretary Jackson on the Celebration of Independence Day

Monday, July 02, 2007

As we celebrate the 231styear of our nation's birth, we should pause to recognize all that has made us a profoundly blessed and prosperous nation. From the multi-cultural and diverse peoples that make up the fabric of our society, to the proud collective accomplishments of increased home ownership for Americans at every economic level, America continues to serve as a shining beacon of light.

This July 4th, red, white and blue will assuredly be donned by many American citizens, and from Alabama to Alaska, the darkened skies will burst with brilliant color and patriotic displays. As households across the USA prepare to joyfully celebrate Independence Day, let us also salute our members of the armed forces who are all American heroes, for it is our troops who assure our continued independence and freedom.

July 4, 1776, marks the epoch when our nation broke away from Great Britain and assumed the blessing of total autonomy. Through self-government and willful self-determination, every American citizen now has the pleasure and the privilege of pursuing the American Dream; its pursuit is our birthright. Its attainment is our privilege.

This Wednesday the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reaffirms the principles upon which our country was founded and our mission of leading families to homeownership, fighting homelessness and partnering with others to build stronger, safer communities. I firmly believe that through our continued hard work, undaunted spirit and unflagging dedication, we will continue to increase home ownership and encourage more families to pursue this American dream.

Have a safe and celebratory Fourth of July.

Secretary Alphonso Jackson
