CBs Develop "Train
the Trainer" Course for Homebuyer Education
Lori Livesay and Sharron Kelly, two Community
Builders in the Atlanta office have developed a homebuyer education course
and manual to train HUD staff as well as staff from non-profits in the homebuyer
education arena. The course, entitled "Homebuyer Education Certification
Process," is now being used by CBs in the Atlanta office as a pilot.
As a result of the recent debate in the mortgage
industry on the performance of "Affordable Housing" loans, the
homebuyer education strategy of the Georgia State Office is being embraced
by the industry as a leader for lowering loan risk factors and addressing
the tremendous need to cure default delinquencies. The approach of the Georgia
State Office is to provide low and moderate income families through a comprehensive
package of pre-purchase, and post purchase education information.
Sharron said the homebuyer manual developed
by the Georgia State Office enhances the already existing HELP books, and
offers approved nonprofit agencies the tools needed to present a quality
homebuyer workshop to low and moderate income buyers. The manual consists
of 11 chapters: Credit, Credit Scores, The Mortgage Process, Choosing the
Right Real Estate Agent, Get an Inspection, The Appraisal Process, Homeowners
Insurance, The Secrets of the Closing Process, How Do I Avoid Foreclosure,
needed Forms and Glossary of Terms. Each chapter includes an outline, handouts,
overhead slides, as well as a CD with a power point presentations on each
chapter.
Lori and Sharron presented the first "Train
the Trainer" class in November at the Georgia State HUD Office. Attending
that class were 77 individuals representing lenders, realtors, non-profit
organizations, and other groups attended. The next "Train the Trainer"
workshop for the state of Georgia is scheduled for late February. |
