Using the Full Array of
HUD Programs to Implement Continuum of Care
Flints CBs are making a concerted
effort to address the lack of utilization of HUD programs and services designed
to help the homeless. Homeless provider consortiums in many communities
across mid-Michigan do not routinely meet at the same table with federal,
state and local government representatives to discuss Continuum of Care
(COC) strategies. Therefore, many providers including consortium consultants,
are unaware of the range of HUD programs that could be successfully deployed
to reduce homelessness, and increase self sufficiency. In addition, many
providers are not aware of the availability of non-McKinney Act programs
to help the homeless since their focus remains on providing shelters for
the homeless.
Flint CB Richard Guerra was a featured speaker
during the December 2000 national CB conference call on homeless issues.
The Flint Office had a post call meeting of 5 of the mid-Michigan consortiums
to discuss COC strategies and providing assistance to enable the consortiums
to enhance their capacity.
The Flint Offices effort to expand use
of UD and other resources to combat homelessness will continue throughout
2001. |
