Kansas City Community Builders
Help Veterans 'Stand Down'
For the past two years, Community Builders
in the Kansas City Office have been an active partner with the Heart of
America Stand Down Foundation to sponsor events that serve homeless veterans
and their families. "Stand Down" is the military term sometimes
used to denote brief periods of rest and recovery.
The Foundation sponsors two events each year.
In June, the Foundation sponsored a 3-day Stand Down event in Kansas City,
Missouri. Homeless veterans were provided full social services, including
showers and a place to sleep for two nights. In November, the 1-day Stand
Down event held in Kansas City, Kansas included a job fair as well as clothing,
food, minor medical treatment and social services for the veterans. This
year more than 750 veterans and their families attended the Stand Downs.
During the two events, CBs advised the
veterans of housing options available. They also recruited a local housing
authority so that homeless veterans could apply for public housing on the
spot. Other participants at the Stand Downs included the IRS, Veterans Affairs
and the VA Hospital. Local community legal service and job service agencies
from both Kansas and Missouri also participated. |
