Community Empowered to Build Affordable Housing
Arkansas
Community Builders Steve Coop, Linda Hardway and Alice Rufus used
HUD's Raise the Roof initiative as the foundation to forge a partnership
with Habitat for Humanity, the City of Little Rock and St. Mark
Baptist Church to develop affordable housing. Despite the skills
and training capabilities of the Little Rock Habitat for Humanity,
they recognized that several impediments stood in the way of their
commitment to building affording housing. Thus, the Community Builders
spearheaded actions that served to remove barriers and stimulate
and empower community organizations to build affordable housing.
As a result, the City of Little Rock agreed to waive costly permit,
inspection and associated development fees. St. Mark Baptist Church
contributed in excess of $5,000, more than 150 volunteers and lunch
for the volunteers at the initial construction project. In addition,
Community Builders secured donated equipment from various local
contractors and businesses. They also participated as volunteers.
Since its inception, the partnership has constructed eight homes
and are already planning more.
