It's never too late to become a homeowner! At the age of 50, a single Delawarean bought her first home in New Castle County just in time for the holidays. The settlement was held on the home on December 15, 2014. It was the 68th home that New Castle County saved with HUD's Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP). The goal of the NSP is to mitigate the impact of foreclosures through the purchase and rehabilitation of foreclosed, vacant properties.

These NSP investments help communities and families that have experienced the brunt of the economic downturn recover. The monies stabilize and revive local neighborhoods and provide more affordable housing.

With the NSP monies the County turned the blighted and foreclosed house, vacant for more than a year, into a home. It's located in the Coventry development in New Castle, DE. That community is within the zip code of 19720--an area of New Castle that has been disproportionately impacted by foreclosure. New Castle County has been targeting that area with NSP funds. Thirty-seven of the properties transformed and sold with NSP are located in that zip code.

Since 2009, New Castle County has been awarded over $130 million in NSP funding. That has generated more than $8.5 million in program income from the sales of NSP properties in the county.
