In May of this year, volunteers from the Des Moines Field Office planned, prepared and served a meal. It was at the Central Iowa Shelter and Services (Shelter) for over 250 persons.

During the planning of this event, FPM staff learned the Shelter had an ongoing shortage of socks. In fact, the shelter was providing over 250 pairs of socks per week.

Consequently, the Des Moines Office of Field Policy and Management initiated the first Annual Sock Drive in the Neal Smith Federal Building for the Central Iowa Shelter and Services. Staff prepared three individual boxes for the collection of socks over a three week period in June, 2013.

This first Annual Sock Drive is a continuation of an initiative to assist with homeless outreach and in the spirit of giving throughout the year.

The generous donations of socks by federal employees in the Neal Smith Federal Building resulted in the collection of over 320 pairs of socks.
