Federal Employees and Cub Scout Pack Conduct Sock Drive

The Federal Executive Council of Central Iowa and Collins Community Credit Union sponsored the third Annual Sock Drive in the Neal Smith Federal Building starting July 2015. Julie Sleeper, Field Policy and Management (FPM), of the Des Moines Field Office spearheaded the effort by organizing the collection boxes, sending reminders to all federal employees and counting the socks.

The sock drive is a continuation of an initiative to assist with homeless outreach and in the spirit of giving throughout the year. All socks collected were donated to Central Iowa Shelter & Services (CISS).

New participants to the sock collection at the Neal Smith Federal Building are Cub Scout Pack 85 from Ankeny, Iowa. Their participation in collecting socks served as their community service project for the Pack.

Socks were collected at the summertime pack events. Noah Sleeper, Webelos 2 Scout, was the lead scout to assist with the collection and delivery of the socks to CISS.

New this year is monetary donations from the Federal Executive Council and Collins Community Credit Union. Their generous donations combined with socks donated from both federal employees and scout families resulted in the largest collection of socks given to CISS.

The total for this year was 1,245 pairs of socks being donated. The socks were presented to Tony Timm, Executive Director of CISS. Tony thanked everyone for their efforts. He stated that the shelter disseminates approximately 400 pairs of socks a week to persons in need.
