City of Ames Celebrates Fair Housing Month
The City of Ames, the Ames Human Relations Commission, and several local sponsors hosted a public march from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, in celebration and recognition of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act into law. The community was welcome to participate. The march was a reenactment of the efforts of activists from across the country who fought decades earlier to get the legislation passed. Once participants reached City Hall, Mayor John Haila read a proclamation recognizing April as Fair Housing Month followed by additional presentations. "This historic and very significant act has brought justice and equality to citizens of Ames and Story County," said Vanessa Baker-Latimer, City of Ames Housing Coordinator. "It is so important to recognize the hard work and sacrifice that went into getting this legislation approved and the access it provides people." ### |
