On January 22, in Skokie IL, FHEO Education and Outreach Specialist Bernadette Jones and Maureen Thurman of Community Planning and Development in HUD's Chicago office visited Fairview South Elementary School's fourth grade class. Located in Skokie, 15 miles north of downtown Chicago, the community has a diverse population speaking over 30 languages. Ms. Thurman's son attends the school and she invited Ms. Jones to join in making a presentation on United States Government, HUD involvement in the Community, Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.

The presentation followed the holiday celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday. Ms. Jones' presentation connected the work of Martin Luther King Jr. with the passage of the Fair Housing Act, thus, housing discrimination was one of her primary focuses. A "Franklin Fair Housing Fox" information sheet was prepared explaining the law's meaning, housing discrimination, and what family members may do if discrimination occurs. Franklin stickers along with some fun gifts for the kids were distributed. 22 children were in attendance.
