A South Jackson homeowner recently felt the positive impact of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program as she became a new homeowner with better dreams of a brighter tomorrow for her and her family. Some 20 new homes will be finished in the south Jackson area before Dec. 31 through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Latricia Bailey became the new homeowner of a new three-bedroom, two-bath Habitat for Humanity dwelling on south Jackson's Winn Street through Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).

Bailey, a patient-care technician, never owned a home before but worked on the flooring of her new home, painted, cleared debris from the property and personally and physically invested much of her time in order to qualify to finally achieve her dream of a home for her and her children.

HUD Southeast Regional Administrator Ed Jennings, Jr. along with new homeowner Latricia Bailey, Congressman Benny Thompson, Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr and Cindy Griffin, Metro Jackson Habitat for Humanity and other dignitaries toured the new home and applauded Bailey for her hard work and accomplishments as a new homeowner.

The NSP money is going toward the construction or rehabilitation of homes in a 5.5-square-mile area of south Jackson, a project with an expected annual economic impact of nearly $5 million, Jennings said.

Jennings, also touted President Barack Obama's proposed American Jobs Act - specifically the Project Rebuild component, labeling it "NSP on steroids." It calls for $15 billion to hire construction workers to rejuvenate blighted properties across the country.

"It represents a $20 (million) to $30 million investment in Mississippi," Jennings said. "It would provide about 200,000 jobs nationwide including about 90,000 NSP jobs."
