The Mississippi HUD office was proud to join the Bay Waveland Housing Authority at its grand opening for Bay Pines Apartment. These 100 units (12- one bedroom, 36- two bedroom, 48- three bedroom, and 4- four bedroom units that range in size from 766 to 1,553 gross sq. ft.) will provide housing to former residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina, as well as, new families in need of affordable housing.

The cottage style homes and community center were designed to withstand hurricane-force winds. The exterior walls are load bearing insulated concrete with Hardie siding veneer. The residents will also save on energy costs due to the use of energy efficient appliances and green technology. The units were constructed with HUD funds that were distributed through the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) in addition to investments from the Affordable Housing Program of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas and Whitney Bank and Low Income Housing Tax Credits awarded by the Mississippi Home Corporation with equity provided by Enterprise Community Investment Funds, Inc.

When talking about this project Mississippi HUD Field Office Director Jerrie G. Magruder remarked, "Housing [Bay Pines] that is energy efficient which will afford residents more disposable income, housing that will be sustainable for years to come. Housing that this community can embrace as a show piece as what affordable housing should be."

Others who joined in the celebration included current and former displaced residents; Janine Lee, Executive Director Bay Waveland Housing Authority; Larry Bennett, Vice Chairman Bay Waveland Housing Authority; Les Fillingame, Bay St. Louis Mayor; Aron Weisner and Monica Gonzalez, Directors for Enterprise Community Investment, Inc.; Gerald Blessey Mississippi Gulf Coast Housing Director, MDA; Sunada Pool-Brookins, Whitney Bank; Mark Loya, Sr. Affordable Housing Analyst Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas; and Karen Ladner, Former Director of Bay Waveland Housing Authority and Current Consultant at the Bay Pines Community Center Building.
