HUD ANNOUNCES $20.7 MILLION IN GRANTS TO PUBLIC HOUSING
AGENCIES
Funding to Provide Greater Access to Computers, Supportive Services - Housing Authority of Butte Receives $150,000 for Public Housing Neighborhood Networks Program

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $20,745,477 in grants today to provide public housing residents greater access to computer technology and give them supportive services they
need to become economically self-sufficient. Today's grants are from two HUD programs - the Public Housing Neighborhood Networks Program (NN) and the Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) Program.

The Housing Authority of Butte will receive $150,000 for their Public Housing Neighborhood Networks Program (see Grants Awards list below).

"These grants provide the tools public housing residents need on their way to self-sufficiency," said HUD Assistant Secretary Michael Liu. "Nothing compares to having access to computers and services that encourage job-training that lead to employment."

Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) grants, totaling $15.6 million will be awarded to 55 agencies. These are awarded to public housing authorities, resident organizations or non-profit organizations acting on behalf
of residents. The funding allows these organizations to hire program coordinators who link public housing residents with training opportunities, job placement organizations and local employers - resources that lead to employment
and self-sufficiency.

Public Housing Neighborhood Network grants, totaling $5.1 million will be awarded to 23 housing authorities. Housing authorities use this funding to establish, expand or update community technology centers. Neighborhood Networks centers provide access to computers, computer training and the Internet. NN centers can also provide a range of services to help residents achieve long-term economic self-sufficiency. Public housing authorities may also use the funding to hire staff to manage center activities, purchase equipment, and provide computer, literacy and job
training.

HUD is the nation's housing agency committed to increasing homeownership, particularly among minorities; creating affordable housing opportunities for low-income Americans; and supporting the homeless, elderly, people with disabilities and people living with AIDS. The Department also promotes economic and community development as
well as enforces the nation's fair housing laws. More information about HUD and its programs is available on the Internet and espanol.hud.gov.
