June 2008 marked a life changing month for Marcy Groves the month she realized her goals and became a homeowner. "I grew up in subsidy and have been with the Lincoln Housing Authority (LHA) for three years," Groves said. "My parents never owned their own home, and I always wanted to provide that for my sons. Thanks to the help LHA has given me over the years; I'm finally able to do that." Groves participated in LHA's Family Self Sufficiency Program which enabled her to gain escrow to use toward purchasing the home. She worked with NeighborWorks Inc. in Lincoln, Nebraska to help her get first-time homebuyers financing. The process took several years for her to be able to make her dream become a reality. Now she is a homeowner. "I'm really excited to be able to paint the rooms whatever color I want, and just to know that this is something we can call our own," she said. "When I heard about the house through the Resident Advisory Committee, I felt it was going to be the one." Groves said her experiences with LHA have helped her get where she is today. It will also help her in the future. "Working with LHA really teaches you how to keep up maintenance and what to watch out for," she said.
