On October 20, Regional Administrator Adolfo Carrión was joined by Senator Robert Menendez, Congressmen Donald Payne and Albio Sires, and Jersey City Mayor Jerramaiah Healy to announce a $2.3 million Sustainable Community Challenge Grant. The Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) was awarded the funds for the Canal Crossing project, which will address modifications to infrastructure, subdivision of properties, zoning changes and better connection to light rail stops and bike paths. The project will revitalize a 111-acre site surrounded by a residential population of predominately minority households with high unemployment and high poverty rates. A residential mixed-use, transit-oriented community will be created with access to open space amenities. In his remarks, Mr. Carrión noted that the grant represents HUD’s commitment to sustainable communities, and to tying the quality and location of housing and transportation to good jobs, quality schools and safe streets. Other speakers at the event included Jersey City Councilwoman Viola Richardson, and JCRA Executive Director Robert Antonicello. For more information on the grant, visit online.
