New Veterans' Housing Dedicated to Former HUD Employee

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in Lakeland, NJ to dedicate the Camden County Freeholders Veterans Memorial Cottages in honor of former Newark Multifamily Program Center Director Water E. Kreher, who passed away in December 2013. The three cottages will provide transitional housing for homeless veterans in Camden County. Each cottage, which will house one veteran and his or her family at a time, is the product of a partnership between Camden County and Volunteers of America, which also manages the 30-bed Home of the Brave shelter for homeless veterans in Camden. With two of the new homes still under construction, officials from Volunteers of America said they hoped to begin housing veterans there beginning in July. The veterans will receive job training and will, eventually, be placed in permanent subsidized housing. The cottage idea was Walter's inspiration. The honor was truly fitting for a great guy who had a true passion for providing affordable housing to those in need. His mother and two sisters attended the ribbon cutting and received a medal from the County in his honor.
