HUD New Jersey Field Office Director Maria Maio-Messano delivered remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony for Montgomery Heights II, a mixed-use, 100% HUD-subsidized housing development that will complete the redevelopment of Newark's former Brick Towers site.

The 154-unit family-friendly building will offer 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments in the heart of Newark; and feature 7000 square feet of retail space. Units will have central air conditioning, and community amenities will include a fitness center, media room, and on-site parking. Pennrose Management Company will manage and provide supportive services.

The complete redevelopment of the old Brick Towers site will consist of 235 units of rental housing, including the existing Montgomery Heights I building.

Developer PennroseOne & the Newark Housing Authority spearheaded the project, financed by the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, Capital One, and other public-private partners. Attendees included Pennrose Senior VP Timothy Henkel; City of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka; Newark Housing Authority Acting Executive Director Ellen Harris; NJHMFA Executive Director Anthony Marchetta; Newark Central Ward Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins; Capital One Senior VP Laura Baily; and former HUD New Jersey Field Office Director Diane Johnson, who worked on the project during her tenure at HUD.
