On February 8, 2012, The Knoxville Field Office participated in the University of Tennessee's Summer Job and Internship Fair and promoted Knoxville Office's 2012 Student Volunteer Program. Field Policy Management (FPM) staff Sheila Cooper and Suzanne Wright set up a booth with information on the Knoxville Office's Student Volunteer Program, and spoke to approximately 50 students who expressed interest in the volunteer program.

Materials distributed included a handout titled "HUD Summer Volunteer Service Program 2012: A Handbook for Supervisors and Students", and the Student Volunteer Service Program Description, which explains how HUD's Knoxville Office is partnering with local colleges and universities to introduce a College Student Volunteer Service Program, where eligible students can receive on the job experience in a field closely related to their field of studies.

Students who are selected for the program will be assigned a HUD staff mentor, who will coordinate job assignments and provide training. Assignments may include field trips with HUD staff to meetings with HUD funded partners. Students will be assigned to whatever program area best fits the student's major, background, and interest. Upon completion of the internship, the students will have an excellent understanding of HUD's mission and programs.

Many students left resumes and many expressed interest in learning what role HUD plays in the community.
