$6.9 MILLION AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPLEX FOR ELDERLY OPENS IN VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON

VANCOUVER, WA - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the non-profits Coumbia Housing, Inc. and Highland Park Housing, Inc., celebrated the grand opening of Highland Park Apartments, a 56-unit complex for low-income seniors on a 2.4 acre site west of the Vancouver Mall at 5015 NE 66th Avenue.

The project cost $6.9 million, with $5.7 million provided by HUD under its Section 202 capital advance program, $812,000 from the Washington Housing Trust Fund and $380,000 from Clark County for site acquisition.

Highland Park offers 55 one-bedroom apartments for the elderly, a two-bedroom apartment for the manager, a community room, library/computer center, exercise room and garden space. A service coordinator will link residents
to community services to ensure aging in place with dignity and quality of life. The building and grounds will be accessible for handicapped persons. The apartments will be managed by the Vancouver Housing Authority.

Apartments will be available to seniors aged 62 and over earning no more than 50 percent of the area median
income. In addition to providing funds for construction, HUD's Section 202 program provides a rental stream to
insure that rents will not exceed 30 percent of each eligible resident's, less a utility allowance.

The housing authority already has a waiting list for seniors interested in living at Highland Park Apartments. For more information, please contact the Vancouver Housing Authority at 2500 Main Street or by phone at (360) 694-2501.
