The 120-unit project, sponsored and managed by Friends of Housing Corporation, is for low- and very low-income elderly persons. The units are comprised of 80 units of public housing, 36 units of Section 202 funded housing, 4 units of tax credit housing plus market-rate retail and office space.

Financing for the Convent Hill Gardens Apartments came from a variety of sources which is unusual for a low-income project in Milwaukee - from HUD as public housing money through the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee, a HUD Section 202 capital advance grant, tax credits from the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority, and a grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.

The Mayor of the City of Milwaukee spoke and representatives of the various agencies involved in the development of this project were available for the ceremony along with reporters from television Channels 4 and 12 and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
