Charleston HUD Mentoring for the Future with Summer Intern Program

Chelsea McCroskey of Amma, West Virginia has the distinction of being the first student that HUD's Charleston, WV Field Policy and Management (FPM) staff will mentor under HUD's Intern Program. The new program is certainly off to an excellent start with Chelsea hitting the ground running by playing a key role in coordinating important informational resources surrounding many of the available rental housing programs in the State. Her work will be one that extends beyond HUD's own resources to those of local partners such as the US Department of Agriculture's Office of Rural Development and to properties funded through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) program. The goal of Chelsea's project is to help improve the local office's efficiency and service to its customers by providing quicker and more accurate rental program information. In the long run, Chelsea will be helping citizens in West Virginia have better access to a wide variety of rental housing resources and programs, resources that can often seem a bit complex and daunting.

Ms. McCroskey will be a junior at West Virginia University this fall pursing a degree in Business and Finance, and has been on the Dean's List. She graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in Clendenin, West Virginia, and was the Salutatorian of the 2007 class. Chelsea was awarded a West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship, which is a merit-based scholarship program based on a students academics. In Chelsea's spare time, she enjoys traveling, skiing, swimming, and other outdoor activities.

HUD's Intern Program is available in all office locations around the country. While students may or may not be assigned work in their field of study, they obtain valuable work experience on housing and community issues, along with an understnading of how HUD's services can impact a community.

The Charleston HUD Office FPM staff is convinced that Chelsea will excel to the top of her chosen career. While she will leave the office soon to return to college, they hope the skills and knowledge she received from HUD will follow her into the future.
