STATEMENT OF HOUSING SECRETARY ANDREW M. CUOMO
"BEST NEW HOME SALES YEAR SINCE 1978"
Today's good news makes this the best year for new home sales
in nearly two decades and caps one of the strongest years for
homeownership in recent memory. The surge in home sales and
homeownership are directly attributable to the effectiveness of
President Clinton's policies for economic growth and are a positive
economic sign for American families.
[NOTE: In 1996, the nationwide homeownership rate climbed to
65.4 percent of all households -- the highest rate in 15 years.
Cuomo's agency -- the Department of Housing and Urban Development -
- has been leading the effort of the National Partners in
Homeownership to achieve President Clinton's goal of surpassing the
all-time homeownership record of 65.8 percent and creating 8
million new homeowners by the year 2000.]
