HUD RESPONSE TO STATEMENT BY CAC PRESIDENT DEALING WITH CHICAGO HOUSING AUTHORITY

WASHINGTON - Harold Lucas, Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, issued the following response to a statement today by Mamie Bone, President of the Central Advisory Council. The CAC is made up of the Presidents of Resident Associations at public housing developments in Chicago.

Lucas said: "HUD is thankful for the support given to us by the Central Advisory Council. I appreciate the valuable input and cooperative effort by the residents of Chicago in this process. As the CAC points out, although we did not yet convey all of CAC's issues, we did focus our recommendations to the City on the major areas of concern most relevant at this point in the plan's development.

"It continues to be our priority that the Chicago Housing Authority plan be expeditiously reviewed and implemented so that public housing in Chicago can be transformed to benefit the families in Chicago.

"Our goal is to make Chicago a national model for housing.

"Again, I appreciate the support of the residents. Let's continue to go forward and work together in this effort."
