HUD Announces $3,615,000 Loan Guarantee for Greenville, SC Special Emphasis Neighborhood Infrastructure Investment Project
WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a $3,615,000 loan guarantee to the City of Greenville, South Carolina. The loan guarantee, offered through the Section 108 Loan Guarantee Program (Section 108), will be used to finance the construction of approximately 12,000 linear feet (2.3 miles) of sidewalks, including curbs and gutters, in six communities in designated Special Emphasis Neighborhoods whose residents are primarily low- and moderate-income persons (LMI).
"Solid, well-built infrastructure is the cornerstone of healthy, sustainable communities," said Marion McFadden, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Community Planning and Development at HUD. "By providing this loan guarantee, HUD keeps Greenville families safe and builds strong structures for their businesses. This project shows how HUD can provide low- and middle-income communities with impactful, broad investments into their public services."
This project will provide funding to six Greenville neighborhoods: Arcadia Hills, Greenline-Spartanburg, Nicholtown, Pleasant Valley, Southernside, and West Greenville. It aligns with the City of Greenville's Consolidated Plan, which describes a continued need for public improvements, such as sidewalks, in the City's Special Emphasis Neighborhoods.
Section 108 provides states and communities with low-cost, long-term financing for economic and community development projects that primarily benefit low- and moderate-income persons. Section 108 can be used for a variety of projects, such as housing, infrastructure, and other physical development projects. The flexibility of the program makes it an attractive and effective tool for states and local governments that receive funding under the Community Development Block Grant program.
