HOMEOWNERSHIP ZONE SITE:

The Del Paso Nuevo Homeownership Zone (HOZ) is a 163 acre area located in northern Sacramento. It is bounded by Silver Eagle Road and Interstate 80 on the north, Marysville Road on the east, Arcade Creek on the south, and the East Main Drainage Canal and Norwood Avenue on the west. At the time of the Homeownership Zone designation, the area was a blighted, under-developed area.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Sacramento's Homeownership Zone proposal calls for the comprehensive redevelopment of the area into a new homeownership community that will link two previously isolated neighborhoods. The plan calls for new infrastructure, new parks and a town square commercial development. Development will occur in seven phases. The local high school is actively involved. Local students participate in landscaping design.

INNOVATIONS:

  • The City contracted with the UC Davis/Grant High School Youth Entrepreneurial program to maintain new landscaped right-of-ways.
  • Grant HS youth were involved in developing the design concepts for the two new parks. Students will also design a complete backyard landscaping plan for one model home.
  • Through the Grant High School Environmental Organization (GEO), students designed and created 500 decorative tiles that were installed throughout the HOZ. Students grow plants in their greenhouses that are used for HOZ landscape projects and sold to community residents.
