HUD's Hammer Award Winners

Reinvention of the Fair Housing Initiatives Program

Brief Description
The Program has been reengineered to serve as a model in other departmental grant programs. Over the past year, a core team composed of representatives throughout the agency and consultants from Price- Waterhouse examined the process for awarding Program grants, with the goal of streamlining the process. The team's findings and proposed solutions recommended an overall reduction of the grant cycle time from 131 weeks to 36 weeks; and increasing the percent of activities that add value to the final product from 6.4 percent to 37.2 percent, giving a five year cost savings of over $1.9 million. The Team began implementation in the Winter of 1995.
