A Message from Secretary Martinez - World AIDS Day

Tuesday, December 04, 2001

Today, December 4th, the Department will observe World AIDS Day - a day to remember those who have died due to AIDS, the many thousands who are struggling with HIV disease, and their families.

AIDS awareness efforts are underway throughout the nation and the world, supported by governments as well as compassionate public and private groups. HUD is pleased to help carry the important message of AIDS awareness to our extended families - especially American youth, since people under the age of 25 represent half of all new cases of HIV infection.

Everyday, HUD works with hundreds of community-based nonprofit organizations, the faith community, state and local governments, private businesses, schools and universities and citizens to help support people who are suffering with HIV/AIDS. A goal we all share is to eliminate the traumatic effects and hardships caused by this terrible disease.

This year the theme of World AIDS Day is "I careDo You? Youth and AIDS in the 21st Century." The goal is to help educate people throughout the world, and American youth in particular, to prevent the spread of HIV.

As part of the World AIDS Day recognition, HUD's Office of HIV/AIDS Housing, the Health Unit, the Employee Assistance Program, AFGE Union Local 476, and GLOBE (Gay, Lesbian or Bi Employees) are coordinating an event at HUD Headquarters. All employees are invited to attend the Department's World AIDS Day activities in the South end of the HUD cafeteria today at 12:00 pm.

A special presentation will be made by speakers from the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry, including young persons who serve as peer educators who will be sharing their experiences. Also, a panel from the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be displayed, and there will be several information tables on AIDS and HUD's AIDS-related programs. These activities will take place in the cafeteria at Headquarters. Local HUD offices may also be hosting education efforts.
