Wednesday, May 08, 2002

To promote both homeownership as well as fair housing during Fair Housing Month, HUD's Manchester Field Office staff joined with the New Hampshire Human Rights Commission to staff a HUD booth at the Concord Home Show, April 6th & 7th. Visitors received homeownership information from HUD and guidance and information about human rights and housing discrimination from the Commission.

Individuals had an opportunity to discuss concerns about discrimination with the Commission's Executive Director. The HUD Manchester Field Office Director's staff has worked with the NHHRC to develop legislation to make NH housing discrimination laws substantially equivalent to the National Fair Housing Laws. This coordination and collaboration will allow HUD's Manchester Office to create additional opportunities to partner with New Hampshire on Fair Housing concerns.
To mark the 34th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, HUD's South Carolina Office hosted a civil rights forum on Monday, April 22. In accordance with the National Theme "Celebrating Diversity and Ensuring Equal Opportunity," the Forum emphasized the commitment of Secretary Martinez to enforce the Fair Housing Act and other laws that prohibit discrimination and the intimidation of people.

The Forum was attended by more than 150 customers, partners and citizens. Clyburn; Charles Sparks, USDA; and Sue Berkowitz, Appleseed for the Legal Justice Center.

Earlier in the month, Governor James Hodges held a press conference to proclaim April as Fair Housing Month in South Carolina.
To celebrate Fair Housing Month, the Utah Fair Housing Forum joined with the Utah Apartment Association for the Fair Housing Conference and Apartment Trade Show on April 11th at the South Town Expo in Sandy, Utah.

In other celebrations in Utah, the Park City Board of Realtors sponsored a Fair Housing Poetry Contest at two Park City Schools. Nearly 50 middle school students participated in this year's contest. Each of the schools had three winners, who received a certificate and a $50 savings bond. This year's theme was "Good Neighbors Unite the World through Peace and Tolerance." The awards were presented by Park City Board of Realtors and Michele Hutchins from the Utah State HUD office.
