Birmingham field office staff support one stop center for evacuee assistance

U.S. Housing and Urban Development, Birmingham Field Office staff is manning the first One Stop Resource Center in the City of Birmingham, Alabama. for evacuees of Hurricane Katrina on a daily basis and providing evacuee families with information on how HUD can help in their transition from life in a shelter to more appropriate temporary housing choices.

The City of Birmingham and the United Way of Central Alabama received national recognition for creating the first One Stop Resource Center for evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. Birmingham Mayor, Bernard Kincaid converted Boutwell Auditorium in downtown Birmingham into a one stop center where evacuees could coordinate with HUD, United Way, American Red Cross, Catholic Social Services, faith-based and community organizations the Department of Human Resources, Social Security, Medicaid/Medicare, State Unemployment Office, local employers, the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District and other agencies in the City of Birmingham. The center opened September 7, 2005 and continues to serve those affected by the hurricane.
