HUD's Housing Choice Voucher program helped Karen Jewell into her own home -- and let her garden to her heart's content

Before moving, Karen lived in a small apartment in the city of Wasilla, and had no yard or garage. Today, with the help of HUD's Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) homeownership program, Karen lives in a comfortable, ranch-style, log home in a wooded setting, and grows her own vegetable garden.

In a letter to the program administrator at Alaska Housing Finance Corp., Karen says: "I can't believe it has already been one year! I do so love my house, so very, very much. On days when I'm sick, I just look around and give thanks, for I am so blessed. My children laugh because they know how happy I am. Again, I thank you, the Alaska Housing Choice Voucher homeownership program, and God for my miracle. Thank you so much -- there aren't enough words to express my thanks. Karen Jewell"

Although Karen now must pay for all utilities and maintenance on her home, she welcomes the additional responsibility. With homeownership, she says, comes an increased sense of accomplishment, self-worth, and hope for a better future.

Alaska's pilot HCV Homeownership Program was limited to individuals who experience permanent disabilities. On May 18, 2005, the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation Board of Directors voted to expand the program to working families. Currently, there are 24 homeowners through the program, and several more families moving quickly toward homeownership.
