This session provided the necessary tools
for organizations to set up computer learning centers in public housing
facilities. Joseph Garcia, Secretarys Representative, said of the
computer centers, "It has to be about providing opportunities for the
community. Residents have to seize the opportunities but without the proper
training they cannot seize these opportunities."
Participants learned of the various methods
in which centers offered computer training to their community. The Twenty/20
Education Communities Program is a consortium of 25 housing developments.
Each center also has developed creative ways in which to offer additional
services to their residents. One center offers 20 hours of computer time
for 1 hour of volunteer timeincreasing their volunteer database as
well as providing a need within the community. Another center offers educational
"tracks" that include office, cashier and entrepreneurial training
as well as computer training. This session shows that the computer centers
can be the starting points for offering a necessary services to the community. |
