In response to overwhelming interest to our January grant writing workshop, "The Art and Science of Grantwriting," the Birmingham Field Office sponsored a second workshop in Montgomery, Alabama on March 2nd and 3rd, 2004. Trainer Fred Washington, of the Tampa, Florida, HUD office, brought the high level curriculum from HUD's Center for Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to 101 prospective grant writers. Workshop participants came from all over the state with significant attendance from Alabama's Black Belt. A key element of the training was a set of real life exercises that included generating "mission" and "needs" statements. These group activities simulated many of the challenges that applicants face as they put together their projects and grants. A group of experienced grant reviewers, who were among the participants, added an additional element of realism when they rated, and publicly reviewed, the statements. Some rated it "the best workshop in their professional life."
